  • CAN YOU QUALIFY FOR THE BOSTON MARATHON ON THIS COURSE?

Yes; we will send the final results to Boston after the race.

  • WHAT ARE THE LOGISTICS OF GETTING TO THE START? IS IT EASY?

Very easy. There is free parking available at the Marshall Football stadium where the race starts and ends. If this parking is all filled then you may use any parking available at Marshall. The best of this parking would probably be the parking garage which is about 200 yards west of the stadium on 3rd Avenue (it’s within easy site of the starting line).

  • WHERE MAY I PARK?

The university stadium parking lot will be available for runners until 6:30 a.m. upon which time it will be closed to traffic.  20th Street will also be closed to traffic in preparation of the MUM after 6:30 a.m.  After 6:30 we encourage everyone to park at nearby parking garages (less than 100 yards away) on third avenue or surface lots on both 3rd and 5th Avenue.  All university parking is free to MUM participants.  There is plenty of free available parking available within a short walking distance of the start/finish line.  Please provide yourself plenty of time for arrival and preparation.  Streets will be busier than usual as some streets will be shut down in preparation of the MUM.   We do discourage anyone from parking in private lots.  Private business lots are strictly enforced and violators will be towed.

  • WHAT FLUID REPLACEMENT WILL THERE BE ON THE COURSE?

Water and Gatorade are available at approximately 1.5 mile intervals. There are no gel packets provided on the course. We recommend you bring your own.

  • ARE THERE BATHROOM / PORTAJOHN FACILITIES ALONG THE ROUTE?

Yes – at the start and finish; 2 miles, 3.3 miles, 6.5 miles; 8 miles; 9 miles; 12 miles for the half-marathon and then at the same locations on the second loop of the marathon.

  • IS THERE AN EARLY START FOR SLOWER RUNNERS?

Sorry, but no. Safety is the biggest reason. There is a 6 hour time limit which should help however.

  • ARE THERE ANY PROVISIONS FOR BAGGAGE AT THE START?

There will be no bag check. Start and Finish line are within 100 yards of each other and there is ample parking at the start.

  • WHY IS THERE ONLY ON-LINE REGISTRATION?

This is a very difficult decision on the part of the race committee, but because of registration deadlines and the financial repercussions of these deadlines we have decided that electronic registration is the most efficient means of registration for our participants.

  • HOW DO I BECOME A VOLUNTEER?

Click here and fill out the form. All volunteers will receive a great race t-shirt.  We like to have volunteers pair up for safety reasons as well as social reasons so sign up your friend to volunteer also.

  • WHAT IS THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AT START TIME?

37 degrees; the average high for early November here is 56 degrees; in other words, perfect for fast race times.

  • CAN I USE A BABY JOGGER, WALKMAN, I-POD, ROLLER BLADES, BIKE OR HEADPHONES?

No. Insurance restrictions prohibit the use of these. In addition this is not a closed marathon course. The use of all electronic devices is prohibited on the course in accordance with RRCA (Road Runners of America) and USATF (U.S. Track and Field) rule 1.44.3 (f). These devices include cell phones, MP3 players, and other portable audio or video devices using headphones. You are subject to disqualification should you choose not to follow this policy. While we do much to try to make the course as safe as possible there are cars that could enter the course and it is the runner’s responsibility to be aware of this.

  • IS THIS A CLOSED COURSE?

No. Runner’s lanes will be separated by traffic cones – please stay inside the cones at all times. Volunteers and police officers will monitor the course. Remember that you still need to be prepared for the unexpected whenever you run. Not all drivers pay attention even with these precautions.

  • MY TRAINING IS GOING WELL OR NOT SO WELL. IS IT POSSIBLE TO CHANGE RACES?

Yes.  This must be done by the conclusion of early registration on October 30th.  This CANNOT be done on race morning.  Please contact MUMDirector@gmail.com for any changes in your registration.  Changes prior to October 30th will be conducted free of charge as a courtesy but changes after this date will be assessed a $10 Administration fee.

  • I AM ENTERED IN THE RACE BUT BECAUSE OF AN INJURY CANNOT COMPETE. CAN I DEFER MY PARTICIPATION TO NEXT YEAR OR GET A REFUND?

Sorry, there are no refunds with the exception of military personnel being deployed overseas. Nor, will we mail packets to those participants who are unable to participate and have registered.  In the event of deployment, we would require proof of deployment signed by commanding officer.

  • I AM REGISTERED IN THE RACE. WHEN WILL I RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE?

You should receive an email confirmation. We suggest printing the registration page too. Just click on our registration link at the bottom of the page to sign up for the 2023 Marshall University Marathon. If you don't receive an email, check your spam folder.

  • IS THERE TAG TIMING?

Yes. We will be using disposable chip tags.

  • WHY IS THE REGISTRATION CLOSED SO EARLY THIS YEAR AND THE PRICE SO HIGH FOR REGISTRATION THE DAY BEFORE THE RACE?

We need to make sure that we get accurate timing results ASAP after the race finishes. In the past, the majority of problems have been related to misinformation provided to us during the registration the day before.  We don’t want our Boston qualifiers to miss the cut-off. Basically we encourage early registration to help everything run smoothly. We are not looking to make a profit on those deciding to run the race at the last hour.  After all, we’re a non-profit organization.

  • WILL WE HAVE TIMING MATS AT THE START LINE?

Yes. Your time will start when you cross the start line. There will be timing mats at the start, six, thirteen and nineteen mile markers.

  • IF I AM UNABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MUM AFTER REGISTERING WILL YOU MAIL ME MY RACE PACKET?

Sorry, but no. It is the responsibility of the runner to make arrangements to pick up your packet. Mailing packets is both expensive and time consuming.

  • ARE THERE PACERS FOR THE HALF AND MARATHON?

Yes, we do offer an MUM Pace Team. Pace Times are as follows:

Half Marathon – 1:30, 1:45, 2:00. 2:15, 2:30, 2:45, 3:00

Marathon – 3:00, 3:15, 3:30, 3:45, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 5:00, 5:15, 5:30, 6:00

  • DOES THE RACE START TIME REFLECT THE TIME CHANGE?

Did you know that Daylight Savings Time falls on MUM Day each year? The race begins at 7am reflecting the time change. We adjust our clocks back one hour, but will still run the race at 7:00am, which will feel like 8:00am. That is complicated to write.. trust your cell phone with the time, but not your alarm clocks! That extra hour of sleep does the body good on race day.
